UK Pet Food Association Supports
Complete Vegan Diets for Dogs

Plant-based diets for dogs are becoming increasingly popular as pet owners look for ways to improve their canine best friend's health and longevity. Scientific studies have shown that owners switching their dogs to a vegan or flexitarian diet can help prevent disease and illness in our furry friends. Various studies have found that nutritionally complete plant-based diets for dogs provide the essential nutrients needed for a long and healthy life. Studies have also shown that dogs are just as happy eating vegan dog food as they are a traditional meal.

Benefits of plant-based dog food

Not only does vegan dog food provide essential nutrients for dogs, but it also eliminates the risk of allergies associated with animal-based ingredients. Food allergies are becoming increasingly more common in dogs and are responsible for most gastrointestinal and skin issues (Mueller and Colleagues, 2016). Furthermore, recent research has found that vegan diets can reduce the risk of obesity in dogs as well as other health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. The evidence is growing in support of vegan diets for dogs, making it an attractive option for pet owners looking to improve their dog’s health and wellbeing.

A wave of new research

Vegan dog food is generating great interest among pet owners and new studies are highlighting its benefits. These novel studies and books are based on scientific research that has shown the positive impact vegan dog food can have on a dog's health and nutrition. Canine Nutritionist Diana Laverdure-Dunetz, MS, and W. Jean Dodds, DVM, authors of ‘The Plant-Powered Dog: Unleash the healing powers of a whole-food plant-based diet to help your canine companion enjoy a healthier, longer life’ believe that balanced plant-based diets are safe for our canine companions and can even increase longevity by preventing common diseases. The book, published by Dogwise in January 2023, takes the latest scientific studies and dispels the myth that dogs are carnivores. It is now known that the physiology of dogs enables them to process the nutrients and is a safer alternative to meat.

The support for vegan dog food grows

UK Pet Food (the UK’s Pet Food Manufacturer’s Association), endorses plant-based diets for dogs in their latest article. UK Pet Food are an association which aim to improve the well-being of our pets and educate on topics such as pet nutrition. Feeding your dog a complete and balanced meal is now easier than ever and HOWND are leading the way. In a study published by Domínguez-Oliva and colleagues (2023) on the impact of vegan diets on health indicators of dogs, they recommend pet guardians looking to switch to a plant-based diet to consider commercial foods containing the required nutrients for dogs to thrive. By providing your pup with a vegan diet such as HOWND Superfood, you can give them the nutrition they need to live a long and happy life while also preventing any potential illnesses or diseases.
