September 2017: Double Gold
We won two of the highest accolades at the PetQuip Awards 2017: Gold in the ‘Pet Product Innovation of the Year’ (accessories category) for our new Hemp-based Skin, Nose & Paw Balms with added Sun Protection; and we were thrilled to also secure Gold for ‘Marketing Project of the Year’ for our nationwide initiative ‘Bring Your Dog To Work Day’.
September 2017: Ethical Accreditation
In September, we were awarded with the coveted Ethical Accreditation from The Ethical Company Organisation. The ‘Ethical Accreditation’ is intended to boost the reputations of ethical companies by signifying independent endorsement from The Ethical Company Organisation. Auditing for the accreditation take between four to eight weeks and is reviewed every 12 months.
August 2017: Paw Balms
After more than a year of development, we launched Playful Pup Skin Nose and Paw Balm and Hemp by HOWND Skin Nose and Paw Balm with added SPF to protect, soothe and moisturise. They are 100% vegan, unscented, fast-absorbing and natural. They can be used to protect your pooch’s snout, nose, outer ears, and any exposed skin from UVA and UVB rays.
June 2017: Bring Your Dog To Work Day 2017
We celebrated record participation in the fourth national #BringYourDogToWorkDay on Friday 23rd June. The day had extraordinary social media engagement from participating businesses, culminating in the #BringYourDogToWorkDay hashtag trending at number #1 on Twitter. Verified accounts such as comedian Ricky Gervais, Larry the Cat from 10 Downing Street, The Grand Tour, Coronation Street, Xbox, Shrek the Musical, Tennis TV, London Fire Brigade, as well as regional police forces, hotel chains and recruitment agencies all tweeted their support. The day also gained significant coverage in the press, including The Telegraph, Metro, Daily Express, Evening Standard and BBC.
June 2017: Premium Spa Range
In June 2017, we launched our first Premium Spa range, including: 25:1 Miracle White & Bright Colour Enhancing Conditioning Shampoo Treatment (5L) & Miracle White & Bright Colour Enhancing Conditioning Shampoo (250ml ready to use). These products are natural alternatives to chemically treated whitening and brightening products. Made with botanical extracts, our entire Premium Spa range contains zero bleaches, chemical dyes or optical brighteners.
March 2017: BQ Live ‘Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year’
We were named as one of 12 finalists for BQ’s first national ‘Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year’ award. Hosted by the BBC’s Mark Easton, we joined the best UK entrepreneurs and their supporters at the Newcastle Gateshead Hilton for an evening of business inspiration. It was an honour to represent the UK pet industry – and reaffirmed our commitment to keep creating innovative cruelty-free grooming products.
January 2017: Shortlisted for Gift of the Year 2017
Our two category-defining natural fragrances – Butch Leather Cologne for Man Dogs and Peach Bum Parfum for Lady Dogs – were shortlisted for the renowned ‘Gift of the Year 2017’. This accolade aims to give recognition to exciting and innovative products that redefine their markets.
December 2016: #WhenHarryMetHero
We launched our first brand lifestyle movie entitled ‘When Harry Met Hero’. The two-minute film documents the relationship between a boy and a rescue puppy as they grow up together. It aims to promote the adoption of rescue dogs, following the popularity of the ‘Adopt Don’t Shop’ campaign against puppy farming. The film has had an incredible reception so far – with over 1 million people watching it on Facebook.
October 2016: URICA
Mark and Jo, our pawesome founders, completed a video interview with URICA – a supply chain funding company for SMEs. The interview sheds light on how we have grown as a business in recent years and why working with partners such as URICA is vital to success.
September 2016: PetQuip Marketing Award
Improving on last year’s award result, we won the Silver Award for PetQuip’s ‘Marketing Campaign of the Year’ following the success of Bring Your Dog To Work Day 2016 in the press and on social media.
September 2016: London Fashion Week
We had a taste of high fashion at London Fashion Week on Friday 16th September. Our natural fragrances featured at the acclaimed designer Elle B Zhou’s Spring/Summer 2017 ‘Ready-To-Wear’ show at Sketch, London. Representatives from high fashion magazines such as Marie Claire and Vogue were in attendance, with all guests receiving a gift bag including HOWND Butch Leather Cologne for Man Dogs and HOWND Butch Leather Cologne for Man Dogs.
June 2016: Bring Your Dog To Work Day
The summer saw the UK’s third annual Bring Your Dog To Work Day take dominate the press and social media. Despite the EU referendum result dominating the news cycle on Friday 24th June, the official #BringYourDogToWorkDay hashtag trended on Twitter – reaching over 13 million people in little over an hour. It was a similar story on Instagram, with the hashtag being mentioned over 18,000 times alongside images of dogs at work. The day also gained significant coverage in the press, including The Guardian, The Telegraph, Metro, Waitrose Weekend and Fast Company.
April 2016: SCOOT Headline Awards
On Monday 25th April 2016, at St Martin in the Fields, Trafalgar Square, London – we won the ‘Gold Manufacturers’ Award’ at the SCOOT Headline Awards – beating more than 500 other small business applicants to the accolade. The annual awards recognise and reward the successes and achievements of British businesses, large and small. Our online offering, strong brand identity and premium quality ‘Cruelty Free’ grooming products impressed the judging panel: “From humble beginnings HOWND now export globally and supply Pets At Home and many high street and online outlets.”
January 2016: Natural Fragrances
The start of the new year saw us release two new luxurious products to the UK market. Butch Leather Cologne for Man Dogs is inspired by the scent of warm, soft leather and lush woods and contains top notes of vetiver and cedarwood essential oils. Peach Bum Parfum for Lady Dogs is a supremely romantic fragrance with heart notes of sweet orange essential oils and jasmine. Perfect to use on special occasions, these products create memorable fragrances ‘For Him’ and ‘For Her’.
September 2015: PetQuip Marketing Award
In September 2015, we were named as a Bronze Award winner at the renowned PetQuip Awards for ‘Marketing Campaign of the Year’ – thanks to the success of our charitable initiative, Bring Your Dog To Work Day.
July 2016: Emergency Dog Wipes
The summer of 2015 saw us break into a new product category. HOWND Yup You Stink! Emergency Dog Wipes were launched to help dog owners clean their dogs (and associated smells!) effectively on the go. Each pack contains five pH-balanced jumbo wipes that are alcohol and paraben free. It’s the combination of essential oils, aloe vera juice and odour control ingredients which make these wipes brilliantly efficient at cleaning fox poo, cow dung, mud, urine and slobber.
June 2015: Bring Your Dog To Work Day
On Friday 26th June, the second Bring Your Dog To Work Day took the UK by storm. We again used the initiative to raise money for All Dogs Matter – a charity that rescues and rehomes more than 300 dogs a year in London, Norfolk and the surrounding areas. The reception was incredible – even ITV’s Loose Women brought their four-legged friends live on air. There was also national coverage from The Times, The Independent, Metro, London Evening Standard, Mirror, Mashable, BT, Yahoo, AOL, BBC and Capital FM.
April 2015: Colin Taylor Endorsement
Following the launch of HOWND Professional Conditioning shampoos, we received an endorsement from one the UK’s leading dog groomers! “Our groomers love HOWND Professional Conditioning Shampoos, and I recommend them to all our seminar students. The dilution rate is economical. The price points are competitive. We love the fact it has natural ingredients and is made in the UK. Best of all, we love the product!” – Colin Taylor, Colin Taylor Academy, London.
March 2015: Professional Conditioning Shampoos
Following the launch of our consumer range of conditioning shampoos, we created a tailored product for our base of professional groomers. Available in 5L jugs, HOWND Professional Conditioning Shampoos have a fantastic 25:1 dilution rate. What’s more, they too have the Leaping Bunny seal of approval from Cruelty Free International.
February 2015: Golden Oldies
We became the first UK dog grooming manufacturer to create a specific shampoo and body mist for senior dogs. HOWND Golden Oldies Conditioning Shampoo and HOWND Golden Oldies Body Mist use a combination of orange, coriander and petitgrain essential oils to lock in moisture to relieve dry and itchy skin. They both also have pH-balanced formulas, containing wheat protein, oatmeal, argan oil and aloe vera leaf juice, which helps a dog’s skin and coat stay nourished.
January 2015: HOWND
Heeding the advice from the dragons, we made the decision to rebrand Butch & Bess as HOWND, under a new parent company called Power Pet Brands Limited. Subsequently, we also gained the Leaping Bunny seal of approval from Cruelty Free International and became the leading premium dog grooming product brand at all Pets At Home UK stores – selling a range of five conditioning shampoos (250ml), along with a range of five matching body mists (250ml).
June 2014: Bring Your Dog To Work Day
Little did we know that our business would become the creators and organisers of Britain’s favourite day at the office! We organised the first Bring Your Dog To Work Day – along with our from Love Sniffys – for Friday 27th June. The day was incredibly well received by the public and press – and most importantly we raised funds for All Dogs Matter, Pup Aid and Animals Asia.
May 2014: Dragon’s Den
In the summer of 2014, Mark and Jo braved the BBC’s renowned Dragon’s Den. But despite delivering a pawesome pitch to Peter Jones, Duncan Bannatyne, Deborah Meaden, Kelly Hoppen and Piers Linney – Butch & Bess didn’t receive any investment offers. However, we received some great feedback on our fragrances, and some invaluable advice about what we needed to change in order for our brand to grow.
December 2013: Loyal Customers
After building up a loyal customer base with UK dog groomers, our products started to catch the attention of national press outlets, including the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, Metro and Telegraph. The approach of using only natural ingredients in our shampoos – and putting the happiness and well-being of pets above cheap manufacturing – was beginning to get noticed.
November 2013: Butch & Bess is born
Our dog grooming adventure started in 2013, albeit under a different guise! Our founders (Mark Hirschel and Jo Amit) spotted a niche in the UK pet industry for natural dog grooming sprays and shampoos. Feeling inspired, we created a range of natural fragrances under the guise of Butch & Bess, catching the attention of many groomers across the UK.
