Here at HOWND we love puppies! They’re cute, full of beans and always happy! However, puppies can be hard work and need more attention and care than an older dog.

If this is your first time owning a puppy then you will need to be aware of the extra responsibilities that come with letting the little pup into your life. Making sure your puppy gets the correct upbringing will leave you with a rewarding experience of dog ownership. When bringing your puppy home it is important your house is prepared for them, as they can be very messy and mischievous. They will have accidents until they are fully toilet trained, this means your floor needs to be covered if it isn’t hard flooring, otherwise you will end up with smelly carpets. Keep your loved possessions out of your puppy’s reach as they will try to chew and play with anything they can get their paws on. It’s also a good idea to keep any items that might be dangerous to your puppy out of reach, such as foods they can not eat, or small items and products containing dangerous chemicals.

So you need to try and make sure they always have company. Much like a baby, you could get them someone to watch them when you’re away for long periods. You also need be keeping your puppy active, playing with them and taking them out for walks twice a day once they are old enough to be outside. Keep treating your puppy for good behaviour and make sure they understand bad behaviour. A puppy being playful is fine, but it is important that they understand the difference between playing and nipping. If they hurt you it is important that they know they’ve gone too far, this prevents them from becoming aggressive in the future.
